Distance Does Not Mean Doom
This weeks message is entitled, "Just Do it." The biblical text for this inspirational charge is found in Luke 17:11-19, which reads:
Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"
When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.
One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him--and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you whole." (NIV, KJV)
Whenever you receive a word from God, act on it immediately. The ten lepers in the passage above were healed because they at once obeyed Jesus when he said, "Go, show yourselves…" God desires that we would "show ourselves" as dynamic testimonies of his good favor. However, we must not hesitate to follow his guidance. No matter how unusual it may seem, just do it! Undoubtedly, the lepers believed the Jesus could heal them when they cried out. However, Jesus did not heal the lepers on the spot. The lepers
were healed as they went. They had faith and believed God through a simple act of obedience. It was only after they moved out that they received healing. Therefore, we see that faith and action together produce results.
James 2:17-18 says, "...faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do." (NIV)
Most Christians have academic faith. They study and learn what faith can do from the miraculous to the blessing flow. Some are even able to articulate what they have learned, and are content to talk about their faith. Others would rather be argumentative continually going back and forth about what they believe faith in God can and cannot do. And many stand in admiration of what faith has done in the lives of others. However, only those that move into action faith will experience what faith is meant to accomplish.
Finally, as God performs great works in your life, remember to be thankful unto Him. Of the ten lepers that were healed, only one returned to give thanks. And for this thankfulness, beyond being cleansed he was made whole. Beyond receiving a miracle, for him the blessing would be sustained.
